Aica Addresses Acne
Growing up in the Philippines, I was self-conscious about my acne-prone skin and felt un-beautiful. I discovered mud masks helped control my breakouts and soothe my skin, so I made them part of my skincare routine. I never even tried maple syrup, or thought it could be used for skincare.

Tyler Tastes Tradition
Growing up in a maple forest in Canada, I (in red) loved harvesting tree sap in our backyard to make delicious maple syrup each spring - it was a true gift from nature. Maple is deeply embedded in Canada's culture, but I never considered the potential of maple syrup for use in skincare.
How We Met
We met while working in Indonesia. Aica ran kitchen operations for a French café brand. Baking was her passion and it taught her the importance of high quality ingredients, timing, and temperature. Tyler worked for a software consultancy, then launched his own startup in Singapore, where he learned about building a business and the value of making a positive impact.
A Desire to Make a Difference
We spent a lot of time in nature, hiking through mountains, exploring forests, and swimming in the ocean. It was always disappointing to find plastic pollution in these remote and pristine landscapes. We wanted to do something that could make a real difference and were on the lookout for projects that could have an impact on plastic waste.
Discovering Maple Tree Mineral Mud
While visiting a maple sugar cabin in Canada, Aica spotted a creamy brown mud on the floor. We learned it was a concentrate of nutrients and minerals filtered out of maple syrup. Aica took a sample to try as a mask. It left her skin feeling soft, cleansed, exfoliated and hydrated. This set off a journey to find out what was behind the amazing results.
The Science of Maple
We collaborated with a chemist and discovered the maple extract had many beneficial elements for the skin, including over 200 antioxidants, natural acids, exfoliating microbeads, vitamins, minerals, and hydrating sugars. A true gift from nature to the skin.
Product Development
We partnered with family-run maple producers over several harvests to develop a proprietary extraction process that yielded the highest quality maple tree mineral mud. After numerous experiments and trials, we developed a formulation that was potent, stable and consistent.
Product Launch
In 2022 we launched our first product - a mud mask. Local stores loved the innovative concept, product, and packaging. Soon skincare enthusiasts and nature lovers had discovered the mud, and D'Érable Canada truly began.
